چکیده
881 Arousal and Post-Event Tachycardia—Azarbarzin et al INTRODUCTION Heart rate increases at the end of obstructive events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).1-4 In most cases, there is an associated cortical arousal.5-9 Spontaneous arousals (i.e., without OSA) are also associated with an increase in heart rate10-14 Given these observations, the notion that postevent tachycardia is due to arousal from sleep was easy to accept and little research was undertaken to determine the true mechanism of this type of tachycardia. Opening of an airway that has been obstructed for some time is associated with many cardiovascular and respiratory changes that can reflexively alter heart rate, including changes in ventilation; intrathoracic, intravascular, and intracardiac pressures; cardiac output; and blood gas tensions.15 It is therefore possible that postevent tachycardia is mediated in part or in total by reflexes that are unrelated to arousal. Furthermore, postevent tachycardia is observed in the absence of cortical arousal at the AROUSAL FROM SLEEP AND POST-EVENT TACHYCARDIA IN OSA

Sleep Architecture in Patients With Primary Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate sleep architecture in patients with primary snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: In this study, we analyzed polysomnographic data of 391 clients who referred to Sleep Disorders Research Center (SDRS). These people were classified into three groups based on their Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and snoring; control, Primary Snoring (PS), and Obs...
متن کاملGastroesophageal reflux and sleep events in obstructive sleep apnea.
OBJECTIVE Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often coexist. We sought to determine the presence and direction of any association between GERD and sleep events in patients with OSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a case-crossover study among 18 patients with known OSA and GERD. All study patients underwent overnight simultaneous polysomnography and eso...
متن کاملObstructive sleep apnea and its relationship to cardiac arrhythmias.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects approximately 4% of middle-aged men and 2% of middle-aged women. Cardiac arrhythmias are common problems in patients with OSA, even though the true prevalence and clinical relevance of cardiac arrhythmias remains to be determined. The presence and complexity of both tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias may influence morbidity, mortality, and the quality of...
متن کاملDegree of arousal is most correlated with blood pressure reactivity during sleep in obstructive sleep apnea.
We investigated blood pressure (BP) reactivity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The influences on BP reactivity of degree of arousal, the lowest O2 saturation (SaO2), and respiratory disturbance (RD) duration were compared. Ten normotensive or borderline hypertensive patients with OSA were studied with one-night poly...
متن کاملThe heart rate response to spontaneous arousal from sleep is reduced in children with Down syndrome referred for evaluation of sleep-disordered breathing.
Arousal from sleep in healthy adults is associated with a large, transient increase in heart rate (HR). Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have attenuated cardiovascular responses to autonomic tests during wakefulness. We tested the hypothesis that the HR response to arousal from sleep is reduced in children with DS and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared with healthy children. Twenty child...
